The Heart of San Diego Gala 2007

Guests arrived February 24th, 2007 to the elegant Hyatt La Jolla for a very special evening. The event was the 10th Annual Heart of San Diego which benefits the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. It was also a bit of a fashion parade, led by Chairperson Zandra Rhodes herself. Zandra wore Zandra. So did Wanda Kaufman as did many others.

Sally Thornton wore a stunning Mary McFadden gown with beaded bodice, Iris Strauss wore a chic Monique Lhuillier, and Muffie Walker wore a very elegant custom gown with sequin inlays and train.

But this event had a heartfelt purpose too. Over $550,000 was raised for the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. With this spirit, the annual Heart of San Diego Award went to Peter Farrell for all he does for the center and the community.

Among the many there supporting the center and applauding Peter Farrell, were the Chairs Zandra Rhodes and Salah Hassanein, Ofelia and Dr. John Alksne, Mary Ann and Jim Beyster, Emma and Leo Zuckerman, Sheryl and Harvey White, Sally and John Thornton, Iris and Matthew Strauss, Gaby and Rich Sulpizio, Renee and Duane Roth, actors Marion Ross and Paul Michael, Colette and Ivor Royston, Marty and David Pendarvis, Muffie Walker and John Reed, Patti and Coop Cooprider and Martha and Ed Dennis.

Jake and Todd Figi were also there, and so were Pauline Foster, Lee and Frank Goldberg, Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Wanda Kaufman, Richard Levi, Reinette and Marvin Levine, Sheila and Jeff Lipinski, Betty and Dr. Leonard Kornreich, the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center's Director Tony DeMaria and his wife Lori, Dr. David Brenner, UCSD's new Vice Chancellor - Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine with his wife Jill, and Ian Campbell of the San Diego Opera.

Ian was solo this evening. Ann, his wife was hosting a patrons' dinner for the San Diego Opera. Both Ian and Ann are very dear friends with Zandra Rhodes. Zandra has not only been a loyal patron of the San Diego Opera, but also a costume designer for multiple San Diego Opera productions.

Iris Strauss had this to say about the event. "Matthew and I are delighted to support  Zandra and Salah and all their hard work for the new UCSD Cardiology Center, and we are very proud of this award going  to Peter Farrell."

Sally B. Thornton added this, "Once again, Zandra Rhodes & Salah Hassanein have given their hearts to, “The Heart of San Diego.” This was the evening to celebrate! the Sulpizio family and their fabulous, forthcoming, “Cardiovascular Center” filled with “world class,” “super star,” professional staff will make San Diego proud!  WOW! The highlighted honoree, Resmed’s founder, Peter Farrell, received, well-deserved accolades and kudos. What a, “night to dance away” with all “The Beautiful People!"

Beautiful and healthy too. Guests enjoyed a heart healthy meal that included Filet Mignon and herb crusted Halibut, and chocolate decadence cake. Dark chocolate of course. It's good for your heart.

And so too was the lively bidding and later dancing to Kicks.

This is the 10th year that Zandra and Salah have chaired this event. Applause to all of the guests for their generosity to the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center!

Schwab has a B.A. from Scripps College and a Masters of Business degree, M.B.A., from the University of San Diego. Schwab volunteers for numerous charity organizations. She also continues to lobby for water safety and for family violence mitigation. Schwab is the owner and publisher of The Social Diary. Margo is currently writing a book based on La Jolla.
