Fur Ball 2008

'A Flurry of Furry Pets'

The 22nd Annual Fur Ball themed 'Pets in Silhouette' took place August 16th, 2008 at the San Diego Campus for Animal Care. It was all to benefit the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. Over a hundred very cute and dressed to their best dogs came with their 600 or so favorite pet people.

Co-Chairs Beverly and George Coles of Coles Fine Flooring came with their big lab Ben, Lynda and Richard Kerr came with their clowns literally. Their boxers Chopper and Charlie wore matching clown outfits custom designed by Jemima Garcia of La Jolla.

Sheri and Dr. Stuart Jamieson were there also. They came with their furry Spencer. Spencer's image was also on Sheri's purse. Sheri joked that she left her horses and llamas home at their Ranch up North.

Melissa and Michael Bartell came with their Standard Poodle security team, Yvette and John Snyder arrived with Milo, Nina and Bob Doede brought Coco, and Rescue Tadey came with her parents Jordan, the well known animal themed designer of Jordan Art Couture, and David. David wore a hand painted tie done by Jordan. The painting was of Tadey of course!

Taylor Miller of La Jolla and Utah was there with her tiny Yorkie Armani dressed in pink. Taylor wore a pretty bright form fitting number by Passion by Italia. Barbara ZoBell, dressed in a purple Jordan trousered suit, brought her two Yorkies Mini and Max, and her husband Karl ZoBell of course..

Guests enjoyed tray passed appetizers during the champagne and wine reception. Appetizers included mini-Kobe beef burgers and other tempting nibbles. All by the one and only Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse Grille. Jeffrey also catered the dinner where his seafood paella was a big hit!

And the event went flawlessly thanks to Jim Lennox and his team.

Guests mingled, sniffed and wagged.

More fun sorts there were Julie and Richard Annis with their Yorkie Sofie, Toni and John Bloomberg with their labrador rescue, and super animal angels Judith Harris and Dr. Robert Singer. In fact one of Judith and Robert's cats is named Angel. The other two are Blossom and Daizy. Meanwhile Judith and Robert's daughter Blair Harris was unable to attend this year as she was very busy making her two recent adult cat adoptions, Perseus and Andromeda, feel right at home.

And home is what so many very adoptable animals deserve. And they are ready and waiting.

And so the fundraising evening continued with generous patrons bidding big including two dinners for 30 by Jeffrey Strauss for $10,000 each.... Generous bidding was followed later by dancing to the New Moon Flyers.

This year's Fur Ball honored the Animal Rescue Reserve for all of their 'heroic efforts in saving the lives of animals in need.' Among them was retired Captain Jim Baker who started the Animal Rescue Unit in 1970 after the Laguna Fire. He was joined by a host of heroes including Sgt. Pete McConnell. No late night for Pete though. He and other members of the Animal Rescue team were chest deep in South Mission Bay at 5 am the next day to review rescue techniques. Animal rescue in what ever form is a 24/ 7 love affair.

Among the other animal rescue heroes there were: Capt. DJ Gove San Diego Humane Society Humane Officer, Animal Rescue Volunteers: Capt. Nancy Ellis, Lt. Katie Reid, Ann Marie Alfama, Chris Baldwin, Travis Beeson, Laura Berry, Dr. Martin Buncher, Chuck Butler, Glen Cutright, John Graf, Elaine Johnson, Aimee Kay, Kathleen Martin, Jesse Mauk, Lynde Nottebaum, John Pfingsten, Lori Schary and Julie Swain.

Three Cheers and lots of Barks to the Animal Rescue Reserve and all of the wonderful people at the San Diego Human Society where animal welfare starts at the top and continues just as strongly to each employee and volunteer.

Animal welfare is something strongly known by San Diego Humane Society President Dr. Mark Goldstein, DVM, CAWA, or preferably to him, just Dr. Mark. Dr. Mark not only has quite the credentials, he also includes as part of his home family life a dog, and an African Spurred Tortoise!

And while patrons, volunteers, and heroes, two legged and four legged went home later that night, some deserving adoptable pets knew their perfect forever home was coming soon with such great community support!

The San Diego Humane Society's mission is "to promote the humane treatment of animals, to prevent cruelty to animals, and provide education to enhance the human-animal bond."
