San Diego Council on Literacy Chairman's Circle Reception 2012 in honor of David C. Copley More Social Diary Event Coverage ....HOME It was a bittersweet evening for the 19th Annual Chairman's Circle Reception for the San Diego Council on Literacy December 6th, 2012. Held at the beautiful Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego's La Jolla location, this reception was the first year that the late David Copley was not present..... but then actually, he was present in so many ways. A fond look back to the San Diego Council on Literacy's Chairman Circle Event in 2011. Pictured here are Karin Winner with David Copley, Judith Harris (immediate past chair of the San Diego Public Library Foundation, and Andrew Shelton
For loyal literacy supporters, it was a plethora of incredible memories of David, as well as his mother Helen Copley, hosting the Chairman's Circle Reception at the James S. Copley Library as they did for 17 years. And it just the year before that David opened up his beautiful home Foxhill for the reception. All wonderful memories were omnipresent at the 2012 reception. Literacy supporters Judith Harris and Dr. Robert Singer had this to say. "We were introduced to the San Diego Council on Literacy by Helen and David Copley decades ago. While they were incredibly generous to many causes, this was one of their favorite organizations. As avid readers and champions of literacy, they encouraged all of their friends to be supportive. We are proud to honor their memory through our continued belief in the mission of this worthwhile organization." Worthwhile it is. Stats from the SDCOL reveal the following: "There are 26 affiliated literacy programs that provide free literacy assistance to adults, families and children in San Diego County." In the last year," these programs served 160,000 total learners." We at San Diego Social Diary believe that "Literacy is the foundation and a gateway to a productive and better life. Education, Awareness and Outreach are the key elements to improving lives and the future of our community." For the 2007 event Dr. Robert Singer and Judith Harris were honored for their important presence and support of the San Diego Council on Literacy. J. Walscher Comunications wasrecognized this year for their important support as was US Bank and National University in previous years. With wonderful support from attendeess at this event, to volunteers, the Copley Family legacy for literacy is vibrant and steadfast. Special appreciation goes to Jose Cruz, Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego Council on Literacy, to Kimberly Koch, Executive Assistant to the David C. Copley Trust, the David C. Copley Trust for underwriting the beautiful Rick Wood/ Elegant Events catered buffet and the Giuseppe Fine Catering drink service. Also special gratitude to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla represented by Charles Castle for hosting this event. And to Judith Harris and Robert Singer for all they did quietly behind the scenes. Bravo to all for a perfect and synergistic fit for this event blending David Copley's love for literacy and the MCASD. To learn more please visit www.LiteracySanDiego.org
