La Jolla Playhouse Honors Stellar Supporters and Artists
(You are on page 1 of 2 ... Click to Page 2) age (PP of 2)
"Fund raisers are a big part of a not-for-profit budget and organizations are always trying to make them fresher. The La Jolla Playhouse made huge in-roads in that direction for this year's event . Walking into that elegant Cabaret atmosphere changed the whole vibe of the evening. It felt exciting and new and not just like another gala! Kudos to the entire Team for creating a modern feeling for a traditional event." - Judith Harris
Over 300 gala guests came out to the La Jolla Playhouse to honor past Board Chairs, artists, and the founding department chair.
The big buzz was about the honorees of the evening. Among the list was UCSD’s Arthur Wagner, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus and Founding Chair of UCSD’s Department of Theatre & Dance and the past Board Chairs of the Playhouse, including Ralph T. Bryan, Ted Cranston, Robert C. Doban, Ph.D., Ewart W. Goodwin, Jr., Joel O. Holliday, Charmaine Kaplan, Quinn Martin, Mason Phelps, Geri Ann Warnke, Gary L. Wollberg, Steven M. Strauss and Willard P. VanderLaan, M.D.

Artist honorees this year included “Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright, author of I Am My Own Wife, which originated at the Playhouse’s as the first Page To Stage production, BD Wong, Tony Award-winning actor (M. Butterfly) and star of the Playhouse’s acclaimed 2009 production of Herringbone; and Robert Brill (The Wiz), acclaimed set designer and UCSD M.F.A. graduate.”
Among the guests there to applaud these individuals were Ellen Sarver Dolgen and David Dolgen (he’s the outgoing President of the Board), Gala Underwriting Chairs Lise Wilson and Gail Bryan, Miriam Smotrich in Yigal Azrouel, Event Chair Debby Jacobs in a colorful Naeem Khan, Deni Jacobs in Baracci of Beverly Hills and a killer manicure, Valerie Cooper in Alexander McQueen, Karen Cohn in Oscar de la Renta, and Sheryl White in a white dazzler by Naeem Khan.
More notables in the crowd included La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, Managing Director Michael Rosenberg, and former LJP Artistic Director Des McAnuff accompanied by his beautiful girlfriend Bryna McCann.
Also there enjoying the Wolfgang Puck / JAI Restaurant cuisine, awards ceremony, and later dancing were Bobbie and Roy Josepho, they are good friends of honoree Arthur Wagner and his wife Molly, Martha and Ed Dennis, Margret and Nevins McBride, and Gail and George Knox.
Most of the Jacobs family were there too. They were the big honorees last year.
Honoring was a key word of the evening.
"The space was beautiful, a transformed theatre into a gorgeous nightclub" said Karen Cohn. "It was wonderful to see the Playhouse honoring their past board Presidents and trustees who have supported the theatre since it's inception. Playhouse supporters are so wonderfully passionate about their theatre's art."
“Debby Jacobs outdid herself again by creating another successful Gala for The La Jolla Playhouse with additional help from Gail Bryan and Lise Wilson" added Valerie Cooper. "The dinner showroom was a delightful change and amazingly transformed by the scenery department-loved the ever changing videos! But the most fun had to be Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his hilarious hosting. Thought my favorite character on Modern Family was Gloria played by Sofia Vergara, but I have a totally new appreciation of Jesse! The party honored many that have had a long standing relationship with The Playhouse and deserve to be commended for creating such a wonderful theater. This is the regional theater that has brought so many successful plays to Broadway! Lucky to live in such a great theater town!”
It was a special night for all, especially Harvey White. It was his birthday that night too!
