Salvation Army and "All That Jazz" Re-Joyce'!

The Salvation Army held quite the fancy fund raising affair themed "All That Jazz" last Saturday at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in East County. In keeping with the Center's mission statement of "encouraging positive life-changing experiences," the evening started simply with a cocktail reception of bubbly water and cider served with scrumptious mini-sandwiches and other appetizers by the Hyatt.

And then the evening started to rev up, in a big way too. The Salvation Army's inspiring chorus performed. Then it was legend time. Chita Rivera, the legend in fact. Chita, the triple threat, that's entertainment lingo for actor, singer and dancer, sizzled in a performance synopsis of "All That Jazz". Legends aren't born everyday, nor are great events.

This spectacular evening happened due to the amazing skills of Chairperson Joyce Glazer and Event Planner Clinton Walters. Joyce was dazzling in her Kathleen Wise gown, but nothing could camouflage Joyce's superb organizational skills. The evening was flawless.

The vision for the evening, aside from making lots of money for Salvation Army's community programs of course, was to treat gala supporters to an evening of a lifetime. And that it did.

The Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel was the post-show venue for dinner and dancing. And grand it was. Clinton Walters created an elegant 40's night club scene replete with red, black and white as the theme. Tables were covered in black, accented by red napkins. Each table was lit by a large red cylinder lamp. The dance floor was white with the "All that Jazz" logo lighting it. Palm trees dotted the room and red roses were everywhere. So many red roses one guest joked the florist shops must have sold every last one to this event!

Dinner was Emeril Lagasse worthy. A salad of Boston Bibb Lettuce with grilled shrimp, baby asparagus, avocado and lemon thyme dressing was soon followed by a grilled filet of beef topped with foie gras drizzled with black truffle sauce …. There was oven baked sea bass too, an asparagus risotto and a decadent dessert. A chocolate music box filled with White and Dark Chocolate Mousse, Chantilly Cream and fresh berries.

Dancing and entertainment was provided by the smooth tunes of the Tom Blair Quintet. Cute songsters Suzy Spafford of Suzy's Zoo and Kimberly Layton of The Chargers chimed in with favorite songs of the late and legendary Bobby. An image of Bobby Short and his Dalmatian Chilli were displayed as backdrop.

Among the many there were Toni and John Bloomberg, Jan and Jim Fitzpatrick, Linda and Mel Katz, Zandra Rhodes, fresh back from Milan, Italy where she showed her couture clothing collection, Salah Hassanein, Elaine Lipinsky and Dave Feller, Lt. Cols. Joyce and Ed Loomis, Gilbert Meza, Patricia and Pat O'Conner, Brad Ballard of the Old Globe, and Raffa and Dr. Mouner Saliman.

There too was Emma Zuckerman in a fully beaded Bob Mackie gown with her husband Leo, a young 95 year old Bill Gibbs, Majors Jan and Doug Williams, Sandra Schafer in a brilliant blue sequined gown with her husband Dr. Jeff Schafer, Judith Harris and Dr. Robert Singer, Captains Nancy and Stephen Ball, Brenda Marsh Rebelo and John Rebelo, Majors Cindy and Tim Foley, Lee Maturo, Deborah Westover and Bob Bradley, and Sook and Ron Hansen.

Among those at Chairperson Joyce Glazer's table was Joyce's handsome husband Ed Glazer of course, Chita Rivera and her daughter Lisa, as well as Chita's brother and manager Armando del Rivero, Lt. Cols. Diane and Doug O'Brien, Bobby Short's good friend Robert Nahas and Audrey Geisel with Alex Butterfield.

Others there at the party were John Parker and his posse of pretty's. Nine pretty's in fact. Among the friends joining John for the evening were Julia Parker (no relation), Pat Brown of KNSD, Mary Quigley, Kris Goldstein, Shelly Stuart of the San Diego Humane Society, Nancy Boyce, Alexandra Squires, Pamela Taylor and Stephany Parker his grand-daughter. John is the former owner of KYXY radio station and present owner of Parker Industries.

Pretty too is the estimated $200,000 plus that was raised to help fund the many Salvation Army programs in San Diego. Re-Joyce!
