Timken Robert Wilson

"The Robert Wilson exhibition of video portraits is simply a new way of encouraging our visitors to look at our permanent collection. These arresting videos all are inspired by the same influences as the great works in the Timken and we're thrilled to see traditional messages being delivered in new media. The opening was a robust success with many new faces as we launched our young friends group (name yet to be determined!)." - John Wilson, Director of the Timken Museum of Art

The Timken Museum of Art held a spectacular opening February 25th, 2011 for the video portrait exhibition of Robert Wilson. In a break from the Timken's traditional exhibits, the Robert Wilson video portraits are clearly modern technologically, yet subtly reveal the layers of history and art that influenced them. With barely perceptible movements, the art breathes and moves.

Among the 4 pieces of video art are Robert Downey Jr. lying as a corpse. His left arm is being dissected in a clear semblance to Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp. In another Mikhail Baryshnikov poses as Saint Sebastian. For another Jeanne Moreau is in elegant velvet conjuring up Mary Queen of Scots based on the Nicholas Hilliard painting from 1578. Winona Ryder, the only video portrayed outside, is formidable peering down, only her head is visible from a mound of dirt as the character Winnie from Samuel Beckett's Happy Days.

Revolutionary.... yes. Intriguing, groundbreaking, and thought provoking for sure.

Among the many there were enjoying the Robert Wilson exhibition were Joyce Dostart, Maggi and Pat Crowell, Tim Zinn, Leslie and Gary Meads, attorney Chris Green, the exhibition installation liaison Matthew Shattuck of Dissident Industries, Sarah and John Hawkins, SDM's Megan Blaich and Chad Williams, John Hawkins' sister Laurie Hawkins, Viviana and Charles Polinsky, and Pat O'Connor.
